Matang Mangrove Forest, Kuala Sepetang (Port Weld)

Been there.
Done that.

As usual, I appear nonchalant hearing that we are about to head to Matang Mangrove located at Kuala Sepetang, Perak, after all I was there in June last year. 'Knowing' it will be a quick pit stop for us, I begin to wonder why so much time being allocated as we will only be walking the on boardwalk, looking at mangroves and chalet. it'll easily take 30mins or so.

I bet that's what you guys thought as well. Tettttt! Wrong!

Let me share with you on things to do at Matang Mangrove.
  • Knowledge sharing on Matang Mangrove
  • Mangrove swamp (Obviously)
  • Boardwalk
  • Chalet stay
  • Boat cruise
  • Dolphin watching (Didn't know right?! It's river dolphin)
  • Fishing village sightseeing
  • Floatel stay (Float + Hotel, for avid angler)
  • Prawnerman (cockles and fishes too)
Now it sounds more interesting right!

A 20mins talks on Matang Mangrove was shared by the Matang District Forest Ranger, we learn on endangered bird species, migratory birds, river dolphin (Chinese White Dolphin), flying fox, 30 years reforestration cycle, how mangroves plays a role in HPL etc.

This mangrove forest was gazetted in 1908 and is the largest mangrove forest in Peninsular Malaysia covering 40,711 hectares along a 52km long stretch off the northern coast of Perak.

This includes 34,769ha of productive forest and 5,942ha of unproductive forest. I understood that 95% of this reserve is a tidal swamp which helped us during the tsunami.

Matang Mangrove consist of the Bakau Minyak and Bakau Kurap species.

The Matang District Forest Ranger took us for a boat ride.

Snap here, snap there.

Little did I know, there were a couple of fishing villages around this area.

The fishing village is quite big and modern.

Farah doing her thing.

We were brought to the of the river mouth of Malacca Strait and it was a beautiful journey where we bump into a few fishermen looking for fishes, prawns and cockles. Saw more of the fishing villages along the way.

Fisherman looking for cockles.

At times, the bumpy ride reminded me of a mild roller coaster ride.

This was a great surprise where they took a to visit a floatel, this is targeted to avid anglers. We were also told that you can also catch a glimpse of river dolphins when they normally come out and play during the evening. Not our luck that day, sigh.

For those interested to visit this place, I here share a few tips. Having said that, do run a check incase the info shared is outdated.
