Unique Seafood Restaurant - serving seafood freshness

It’s like visiting an aquarium, only smaller.
Met Soon Hock, and it’s a fish. I am more familiar with ikan patin, jelawat, grouper, and etc, but Soon Hock? It sounded like a person’s name, a friend of Kim Loong or something. I learnt that it is a goby species. So, what is goby fish again? *puzzle*

It is a great opportunity to sample fresh seafood dining, experience great service coupled with reasonably priced menu is a very important aspect every patron is looking for. The medias were hosted by YBhg. Tan Sri Dato’ Seri Mohamad Noor Abdul  Rahim; advisor to Unique Seafood PJ23 while YBhg Datuk Seri mirza Mohammad Taiyab, Director General of Tourism Malaysia was the guest of honour. Food being the best medium of communication, bridging the diverse world culture and connecting all walks of life, seems to be the best way to promote Malaysia’s as one of the best food tourism country.

Being invited to Unique Seafood Restaurant by Tourism Malaysia was indeed interesting and at the same time fun. We took the opportunity to wonder around the aquarium and learn a thing or two on sea creatures. It was both educational and enlightening, few interesting facts I’ve learn.

California Geoduck : Pronounce as ‘goo-ey’ duck and it is not a duck; a species of very large, edible saltwater clam. The part that we eat is the siphon; the long neck that pokes out of the shell.

Alaskan Spider crab : Not a spider. As self-introduced, it is commonly caught in the Bering Sea and Norton Sound, Alaska. And it is one of the largest species.

Australian Snow Crab : It is as white as snow (to my surprise) and even after cooked, the meat remain white unlike other crab meat, which turns red.

Red Tong Sing/Coral Trout fish : Coral trout are piscivores (fish-eating predators).

Import : All these are imported to ensure customer have the freshest meat possible

Cost : It is reasonably priced and is said to be amongst the lowest priced restaurant due to the reason that Unique Seafood  Group of Restaurants is also a supplier and a wholesaler.

Chain Restaurant : Own five restaurant under the Unique Seafood Restaurant chain, three Elite Grand Ballroom and 1 Pantai Seafood Restaurant.

Private rooms : The PJ23 outlet consist of 12 private rooms where it can fit approximately 2-3 round tables, suitable for small event.

Ballroom : Four ballrooms! With the largest room capacity of 1,100 pax (confortably) and 300+ pax being the smallest.

They also offer Iftar packages during this Ramadhan month, the options available are decent and worthwhile for those who want a different selection for their iftar. As for ala-carte, I would recommend the Deep Fried Squid with Salted Egg Yolk, Steamed King Grouper Fish In Soy Sauce and Stir-fried Four Varieties Beans “Hakka Style”. Chili Crab is another dish that one should try and it goes really well with Mongolian Bun. The vegetable dish is something new and unique as well as the salted egg squid, do sample this.

So, what are you guys waiting for, head to Unique Seafood Restarants and try it for yourself.

Canopy Walk - KL Tower, Malaysia

As a child, I remember clearly the cable car at Bukit Nanas, one I kept telling all my friends and not many believed me. Perhaps only the locals know, it was a ‘once upon a time’ story of Kuala Lumpur - Bukit Nanas.

A trip down the memory lane, reminisce my younger days of how I longed to ride on Bukit Nanas cable car as Genting Highland seems so far away those days. That was in the early 80s, the cable car project shut down making way for urban development and modernity. Today, I get to write what was long gone, I get to write how it is now, on the new KL Tower that marks Kuala Lumpur, and last but not least, the canopy walk replacing the memories of the famed cable car.

Formerly known as Bukit Gombak, it was later changed to Bukit Nanas after the infamous clashes between rival clans and warlord, according to history, there was a fort located here unfortunately nothing remains of it today. So, how this hill got its new name; Bukit Nanas? It is also said that they planted pineapples or “nanas” in Malay to deter attackers, thus the name Bukit Nanas.

There are so many version of the story, it became even more interesting as I begin to write about this small patch of greenery in Kuala Lumpur concrete jungle. Another one that I fancied was that this use to me the home of the Malayan tiger and elephants, this jungle is still home to monkeys, pythons, squirrels, and monitor lizards. Gazetted as a permanent forest reserve in 1906, the land has been nibbled away slowly when KL Tower was being constructed in the 90’s. Now, only 9 hectares remains.

KL Forest Eco-Park is the new name for whatever left of Bukit Nanas, 3 main attractions at this hill are being focused currently, namely the Canopy Skywalk and Sky Box at the Open deck aside from the existing Observation Deck, F1 Simulator, Pony Ride, KL Tower Animal Zone and 1 Malaysia Cultural Village.

As for outdoors activities, it covers Nature Trails, Jogging and Trekking Routes (Jelutong Trail, Penarahan Trail, Arboretum Trail), Timber Product Gallery, Herbal Garden, and one can also do self-picnic with friends and family or even camping (with prior permission of course). There’s an activity for everyone.

The whole canopy walk probably takes 30 mins with a few stops here and there to enjoy the view and photo moment, my only advice is to make you bring along a mosquito repellent and avoid dark colour clothes, after all it is a ‘forest’ *wink*. The sight at each tower gives a majestic view of Kuala Lumpur skyline (at parallel level though) with a touch of mother nature enveloping the city.

You can look for the Information Centre that is located at Jalan Raja Chulan, it also has a small exhibit with some old photos and information of how Bukit Nanas was during its glorious years.

Fee : Free of Charge

Me’nate – From a Humble Beginning to Ramadhan Galore

Pronounced as “Mur-na-tay”; Me’nate is a Kelantanese slang word which means “animal”. ME’NATE steakhouse is popular among meatlovers, a place where one can select their own cuts of chilled meats and the chef will prepare it according to ones’ liking. The most well liked and famous dish is the Wagyu steak seasoned lightly with their secret recipe and cook to perfection.

I rarely get an invitation for a food review and yesterday I was called to replace/represent another friend of mine to sample some food for a Ramadhan Food Preview at Me'nate Steak Hub. I bet many have heard about their great food, I tried once at the Ampang Jaya branch and it was nice but never in my life tried their Ramadhan package (despite seeing their promos last year), so yesterday was my first time.

And my verdict?

Me’nate has been in the meat business for close to eight years, owned by once a butcher whom worked in United Kingdom for 10 years as master butcher chef to Queen Elizabeth II. As a professionally trained and qualified butcher, the Australia livestock is being slaughtered in-house, the meat is chilled (never frozen – to ensure the juiciness and tenderness intact), and packing is also being managed internally; thus ensuring only the best is served to their valued customers.

During this coming holy month of Ramadhan, Me’nate is offering their famous and popular Ramadhan package and I am among the lucky few that get to sample them, below are my favourite – Lamb Shoulder  and of course – WAGYU Spare Ribs! But worry not, their other meals are equivalently as delicious.

The Lamb Shoulder was lightly marinated hence it balanced well with Nasi Me’nate. The meat was superbly juicy that I ate it on its own, it tasted great even without the rice. The sauce that comes with the Lamb Shoulder made a great combination.

I have always love Wagyu and Kobe beef, knowing that it will be part of the Ramadhan menu is something a meat lover would look forward too. The beautifully marbled wagyu was simply mouthwatering, sweet and tasty at your first bite. A force to be reckon with I would say – for meat I mean. Couple with Me’nate very own secret recipe rice added the winning touch.

What perfected the Ramadhan package is the soft touch from the management in providing free flow of drinks, bubur lambuk Me’nate, dates, fruits and fresh fruits.

I tasted a few and these are the one that I feel in love with, if you are unable to make it during the month of Ramadhan. You can also drop by and get the chef to cook a dish of your liking. You won’t be disappointed. Trust me.

Well, I definitely didn’t.

Have a blessed  Ramadhan.

The Me’nate restaurants are located in Ampang, Setapak, Bangi and Wangsa Maju. The restaurants open daily from 11:00am to 11:30pm.
