Many of you might have known especially those that follow my Instagram closely, I recently did Stand UP Paddling or SUP as popularly known. Tried that in PD…. Plenty of fun. Nahhhh, did not fall down pun. I forbid myself to. Kiasi!

February is the month for another outdoor activity – Trekking at Kenyir State Park and bird watching (gonna blog about this later). March? I will be in Sabah… follow my Instagram lah as I usually upload promptly here. Blog comes in much later.

If you are an avid jungle trekker – like Adela, this would be a piece of cake WITH icing on top. If you are an amateur like moi… this trek is fairly easy BUT with loadsa pacat jer lar. Opkos lah kan, nama pun masuk utan. Duh!!! It takes approximate 2 hours or so to trek to the 1^st pokok ara or fig tree, then we rested and had our tapau-ed lunch before heading to the 2^nd pokok ara, the proceed heading back to our vehicle via the river route (which took only an hour or so – but we all basah lah sebab kena menyelami hati budi air sungai kan kan kan. HAHHAHHHAHHAHH….).

I learnt few important stuff here, how to identify an elephant dung, Malayan tapir footprint, tiger and sun bear’s claw marks, types of plant that is important for survival and making delicious masak lemak tempoyak (Adela tuh dah try ke letak daun kesing/pijat, sedap ke idok?) and many more. I have to admit this trip is very educational, am glad I joined.

Wayang Kulit Kelantan | Preserving Culture

A little bit about Wayang Kulit Kelantan yah guys.

There are few types of Wayang Kulit perfomances in Malaysia, namely Wayang Kulit Jawa, Wayang Gedek, Wayang Kulit Kelantan, Wayang Purwa and Wayang Melayu. Wayang Gedek is said to based in Kedah whereby northern dialect is being used, and obviously Wayang Kulit Kelantan uses the Kelantanese dialect. Wayang Purwa (which is new to me too) is using Javanese language and last but not least, the Wayang Melayu is performed using the Malay language (with Javanese influences). I attended and event in Kuala Selangor where they too have their own Wayang Kulit and it is using Javanese dialect as well however I’m not sure whether it is the same as Wayang Purwa. A little bit of digging is needed, Lily!

During our trip to Terrapuri, Terengganu we were brought to watch the Wayang Kulit Kelantan or Wayang Kulit Siam. It was performed to the public in conjunction of Terengganu Cultural Festival 2021, the objective is to create awareness and encourage the younger generation to be involve in sustaining our wondrous heritage. Performance are conducted in public area such as museum ground, malls and halls for easy public access.

Not many of us know that Wayang Kulit Kelantan is actively performing in Terengganu (there is not Wayang Kulit Terengganu it seems)

Wayang Kulit Kelantan is also referred to as Wayang Kulit Siam, and it is believed to originate from Cambodia and brought it to Peninsular Malaysia via Patani in Thailand. It is practiced and performed commonly in Kelantan and Terengganu. Hikayat Seri Rama or Ramayana is the epic story in Wayang Kulit Kelantan and it is performed as a form of entertainment ceremonial and official event. The leading characters involved are Rawana and Siti Dewi (protagonists), and Seri Rama (antagonist). Wayang kulit or shadow puppet theater portrays how the society feels back then, being represented in a form of art and music. Not only as a symbol of entertainment but also describe values, life, beliefs norms and heart of the locals back then.

One interesting thing that I learnt is that the dialect or language used in Wayang Kulit Kelantan is both Kelantanese and Sanskrit dialects hence making it not comprehensible to audience outside Kelantan but also to the younger generation. Thus, making preservation of this old art form even more difficult.

You can also watch the Wayang Kulit Kelantan performance in Terengganu, I suggest that you liaise with trusted local agency - Ping Anchorage and get them to arrange for you to visit and experience cultural performances and heritage sites in Terengganu. You will be overwhelmed with Terengganu rich culture and abundance of natural beauty.

Hike to Blue Pool at Lata Payung, Terengganu

Yup! I climbed and reached the Blue Pool at Lata Payung, Terengganu!

When I first got the invite I was excited, the 2 years pandemic got the best of me. I need to travel, waima in Malaysia sekali pun (cis… I sounded so riak and poyo [eyes rolling]). But you guys DO know what I mean kan, we as a human (gitewww) can only go XXX much being stuck at home. I am good not travel out of Malaysia and what not, sumpah I ok jer… but being cooped up at home for 2 years?!??! Serious boleh jadi giler, makanya….. sebelum I terus jadi giler, I decided to join Gaya Travel Magazine to Terengganu. After all, I do miss Lina of Terrapuri, A LOT!

Anywho. I saw the itinerary, jeng jeng jeng… 2 rigorous outdoor activities – Hike to check-out the Blue Pool at Lata Payung and standing in the eyes of the world at the peak of Bukit Kluang. To be honest, I was rather worried with this Lata Payung bit but all game for Bukit Kluang (demi sebuah content, so they say).
 
For those city girl (like moi) who is forever and ever scared of pacat (senang cakap takut insect or anything that crawls lah) then let me tell you that Lata Payung ok jewww… My biggest concern was the hike and kepala air cos when I did a little desktop research, I found out some not so nice news on kepala air here. Hence I decided to share some tips to assist you guys.

⛔ DO NOT LITTER/JANGAN BUANG SAMPAH MERATA-RATA

1. There are parking space available, however come early lah 🚙
2. Make sure your car tank is full ⛽
3. Facilities such as toilet and shower room is located by the roadside/parking 🚻
4. Bring towel, change of clothes and toiletries (ni bukan hotel iyea idok) 🛀
5. Wear proper shoes if you plan to hike to the Blue Pool, and slippers too 👟
6. Those that are not ‘that’ fit (like me), I highly recommend you to bring a hiking stick. It helps!

7. Bring easy to pack and throw snack example : sandwich, cucur, cake/kuih, nuggets, sausages and water as the journey to the Blue Pool is kinda long (unless you suka hike angkat barang berat)
8. DO NOT, I repeat DO NOT wash your cutleries or utensils in the river (jangan cuci sudu/ garfu/ pinggan bagai dalam sungai, lap ngan tissue and bawak balik cuci. Kalau tak, I tak mau kawan) 🚯
9. Follow the track, it is an easy hike with big trees around jer 🌳
10. Take some time to learn about nature and breath the fresh air 🌹
11 Avoid coming during monsoon season, be wary of any indication of kepala air 🏊‍
12. The blue pool is rather DEEP, I do not recommend for you guys to jump in if you don’t know how to swim. Best is to bring live jacket, safety is you utmost PRIORITY.

Dah habis baca tips? Now gonna share my experience pulak.

The hike was fairly easy, a typical jungle hike. The path is easily seen maka jangan risau ni bukan Amazon and also, there is not steep path until you arrive at the blue pool whereby you need to climb down the boulders – licin so masa turun tuh kena turun baik-baik. Along the way, you get to see herbal plants, squirrel, wild orchids and many more. But please not to pluck them to bring home yah, that is a big no-no. Oh yah! I brought along a hiking stick this is due to my long-ago-knee-injury hence I need to be extra careful especially when going down a slope. In general, you guys do not need a hiking stick pun for this hike. The hike took us 40 mins or so sebab asyik stop ambek gambar and the guide taught us about the herbal plant, showed us wild orchidand introduce to us the native trees. A unique Kampungstay in Alor Limbat, Terengganu

I believe I mentioned in much earlier Sarawak Entry on Koperasi or Co-operative activities, Jom Jelajah Koperasi this time around took us to homestay in Alor Limbat, Terengganu where we get to experience the locals’ livelihood, their produce and unique delicacy. Not only that, they also shared with us on how Malaysia Co-operative Societies Commission (Surahanjaya Koperasi Malaysia) work hand-in hand in assisting them on the community progress. With great leadership, Koperasi Alor Limbat Kampungstay is set to evolve, develop and grow at a dynamic speed.

Located in Marang district in the beautiful state of Terengganu Darul Iman with population of 1000, approximately 25km from Kuala Terengganu, this beautiful kampung got its name from a catfish family (ikan keli) which is called ikan limbat. Moving abreast with the economic advancement coupled with opportunity to expend and excel, Koperasi Alor Limbat started Kampungstay to generate a new source of income to the locals via cottage and rural tourism which indirectly opening its doors to domestic and international crowd. This foresight pushed the local to also market their local produce such as Keropok Lekor or Lekor Chips and Madu Kelulut (Stingless bee honey) not only in the local market but also internationally. Lebah Kelulut = stingless bee - Now I know....

Yup!
I never knew that madu kelulut is called stingless bee.
I never knew this bee I have seen before is called lebah kelulut.
And guess what, you can suck the honey with a straw directly from the bee hive.
Ahhh…. Curious aren’t you?!?

You wouldn’t believe the extend of research I did before arriving to Kampung Alor Limbat’s Madu Kelulut Farm – a Surahanjaya Koperasi Malaysia (Malaysia Co-operative Societies Commission) initiative to help, guide and educate the locals for the betterment of their community. What I noticed and learnt from Jom Jelajah Koperasi Media Fam Trip is that the locals (kampung folks) have the resources, skill sets and are success driven but at times are lack in opportunity and guidance. Aside from this, some of their products are of world class standard and have been exported around Asia and beyond. 

Few health benefits that one can obtained from consuming its honey regularly (also mentioned in the Quran - chapter called An-Nahl which means bees by the word of God in verses 68 and 69 means: "And your Lord revealed to the bees: Make hives in the mountains and in the trees and in the created human. "From the belly of bees came out drink (honey) of many hues, wherein is healing for men. Verily in this is really a sign (the greatness of Lord) for people who reflect. ") :

• Its honey is clear in colour and its taste sweet with a tinge of sourish. The honey comes from the nectar of flowers, it increases one’s metabolism, libido, beauty, strengthen women after childbirth and treating various diseases and injuries.
• It is rich in nutrients and acts as an antioxidants.
• Illness cured through traditional healing methods (reporting by Utusan Malaysia May 20, 2011) is diabetes mellitus (diabetes), stroke, hepatitis (liver) cancer, Hipentensi (Hypertension) and Coral.
• A study carried out by Food Technology Research Center, Mardi show fenilpropanaoik acids, amino acids protocatechuik and 4-hidroksifenilasetik are among the main ingredients that have been recognized in the stingless bee honey. These materials belong to the group of free phenolic acids and its presence in the stingless bee honey gives a total of g / g dry weight.
• Free phenolic acid is the active ingredient yangm300 can act as anti-cancer and antioxidant and is easier to be absorbed in the human body than other active ingredients such as flavonoids.
• Hospital Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) has also been recorded that honey has the efficacy of medical terms. Laboratory studies were conducted showed the honey is able to lower glucose lever other than that it was able to reduce the damage of kidney function and oxidative stress.

Aside from learning its benefits, I also found out that these bees are attracted to a certain kind of flowers, popularly known as air mata pengantin (literally translated as brides tear or Antigonon leptopus) of which we see it at some houses – a very common plant.

After asking the bee farm owner, I gather that currently honey fast gaining popularity due to its benefit thus increase in demand but low in supply despite that there are approximately 200 bee farm in Terengganu. This is also where one can drink from the honeycomb via straw (the nectar is converted to honey by the honeybee and stored in the wax honeycomb). 

Coming to Alor Limbat Kampungstay has educated and opened my eyes on the local delicacies and natural produce. SKM not only trained and build a self-sustainable community in amongst the kampung folks, it also developed and grew the rural tourism.

Clam Digging (Kutip Kepah) in Kampung Mangkuk, Setiu

This. Is. Interesting.

I guess I can checked clam digging from my list of ‘adventurous thing to do’.

Adventurous? No!

Unique? Yes! To orang Bandar cam I lah… seronok giler kot. Cer try…

20 minutes earlier.

The tourism folks told be us that we have 1 hour time to kill, just about then, I saw kampung kids (village kids) of Kampung Mangkuk in Setiu (the best place in Terengganu) riding bicycle keliling kampung. Ish! This is almost like a dare to me (tsk tsk tsk), tak boleh jadi ni. I remembered saying out loud I want to ride the bicycle, it’ll be so much fun! And guess who answered me (more like accepted by challenge)? Ruggedmom!!! Mom hokkay, apa jadi ngan budak-budak muda sekarang (gitew)! We walk towards the kids and ask permission for their bikes, the first thing they did was laugh and said “Bicycle takde brake, akak boleh ke?”. “Huh!?!” Memang tak boleh ler tapi I jawab dalam hati jer lah, cakap kuat-kuat kang malu lak. I told them it’s dangerous to ride without a brake taking into consideration some kids were very short, well; kids height basically. “Tahan ngan kaki jer lah” replied them while continue laughing. Ceritanya, belum sempat I tahan ngan kaki confirm jatuh dulu kan. Tak leh jadi ni… daku kuciwa.

Ruggedmom came to my rescue! She called me and said “JOM”, I turn around and saw her with a motorbike (motor siapa lah mommy ni sapu, hehheheheee…. Naik dulu, fikir later). What else but to run to her and hop on the bike “while we were ‘cruising’ I asked her whose bike was this, she said one of the pakcik, then I said “Tak tau lak you ada lessen motor”….. hehhehehheee…. *wink*. This was when we saw the kampung scene, the serene beach, gazing sheep, we even spoke to some of the locals. After about 15-20 mins we decided to ride back to the jetty.

They were gone when we arrive at the jetty! They left 15 mins earlier, we missed the boat?

The story goes. Now.

While Ruggedmom return the bike, I ran (like a lunatic) to the jetty folks and asked for all the boats (making sad face lah, harap belas kasihan) and the kind tourism folks head us and said that we can take the extra boat. Our luck! Not only we manage to get a boat, I got a chatty pak cik as well! Memang interview bagai nak rak lah kannnnn….

Those that know me by now, would noticed how I love rides, train, bus, boat etc. And this boat ride was so calming. The journey was about 10 mins or not to the clam digging area.

Gold nye mana? Hhehehhehee… happy clam diggers at sight! And I think they truly enjoyed clam digging. I seriously think so.

For those curious few, below are the list of what you need for professional clam digging.

• Waterproof layers and boats· Rubber boots

What fun people need for clam digging

• Hand and leg (as in bare hand)

• Good and fun mood

Choose the latter of course *wink*. Hahhahaaaa…

One must know that clam digging requires a lot of skill, especially dancing - one need to do a ‘Get a Jiggy With It’ dance. Noooooo…. Don’t get me wrong, while you are dancing, your feet will move and gently shove/dig the sand bed and the moment you feel your feet brushes the clam shell, then all you need is to bend down and pick it up. See! Easy peasy right? Try it.

It does help if the song itself was blasting out loud, I bet we digged more clam this way. Perhaps I should highlight this ever so smart idea to Tourism Terenggany. #eh #tetiba

So, the next big question pop up, what do you do with all the clams?

Masak lah! Hahhahahhahaa….

On a serious note (ceh wahhh).

Clam digging are largely done by the female member in a household, as the task perform are considered as easy and not to stressful. The female can do it at their free time and still rush home to take care of their family, it is treated as a side income as well as a meal source for the locals. There are a few popular clam dish in Setiu district that the non-locals might not be aware, such as Kepah Masak Lemak, Kepah Serai Bercili, Kepah Berlada Daun Limau Purut and etc.

There is no specific clam season according to the pak cik as it is available all year round, having said that, you can easily find more clam from April to August, this seems to be their season.

Kenyir Elephant Village (KEV), Terengganu

Remember me? I am the traveler that loves zoo.

Just my luck right, visiting Kenyir Elephant Village in Terengganu!? When everyone else is looking forward for the Waterpark at the lake here, I was counting hours to my elephant trip (still excitedly jumping up and down while writing this, despite the fact I visited quite a while ago). My expectation was simple and very low (I hate getting disappointed you see), I assume it is similar to those I saw in Thailand or perhaps the one in Kuala Gandah Pahang. Both are equivalently good but nothing much to shout about, unlike the one I visited in Sri Lanka; Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage. That was quite an experience, something that I will share with everyone and encourages everybody to visit with no regrets. You can read my Sri Lanka stories HERE.

Enough rambling Lily. Let’s talk about the one in Kenyir. The one I lowered my expectation. The one I assume I get to see the elephant in the usual surrounding.

Boy, was I wrong. VERY WRONG.

Upon arriving to Kenyir Elephant Village, I was rather impress with the new parking lot, but then again it is not the parking lot I wanted to see (I calmed myself [lowerkan expectation tuh]). After the entrance area, we are required to walk and climb a tall building/structure.

“Hemmm…. For the life of me, I can’t brain this. Why do I need to climb this 2-3 storey high building? Not that the elephant sits on a tree (eyes rolling)” I told myself, half curious and half annoyed. Abit judgemental pulak. Aishh….

Just then I heard water streaming down the river, my immediate respond was to look up… CANOPY WALK! Apa lagi, I ran up the building to naik the titi gantung lah. I am pelik liddat!

Mind you, that was not the only canopy walk, there were many more and you can see elephants taking a stroll in their natural habitat. Perfect.

Background :

Kenyir Elephant Village is the latest addition to Tasik kenyir’s vast attractions, it was built in 2012 and cover of 256 hectares of land, but only 20% of the area are developed and the rest of them remain untouched. The purpose of keeping the 80% area untouched is to protect the wild also the forest.

The main concept of KEV is to educate public about the habitat and behaviour of the elephant and brighten up the nature atmosphere to the public. Additionally, Canopy walk are built for tourism to experience a majestic adventure with different viewing angle for the habitat of elephant and discover the scenic view of the nature forest.

Aside from the show, there are also elephant education tutorial whereby the rangers with teach the public on awareness, there are 2 session as of now; 10:30am and 3:30pm, elephant ride, photo opp, feeding the mamals and bathing time of which most people enjoy watching them taking their bath.

I have to admit, I am fascinated with the whole attraction area and how the management came out with such a great idea. Let me stress again, the place is big huge! You can check out my pictures HERE.

Managing Human-Elephant Conflicts

Kenyir Elephant Village was conceptualised and built in 2012 to educate the public on nature and wildlife. It was set up by the Elephant Management Unit under the authority of the Department of Wildlife and National Parks, Central Terengganu Development Authority and Terengganu State Government. The Elephant Camp is the foremost authority on elephant translocation to ensure a healthy elephant population and reduce human-elephant conflict.

Café is located nearby the bathing area (river) where one can view this beautiful creature relaxing while being showered by their caretakers (giler jeles). The scene here is pretty awesome I must say.

How To Get There

If you’re coming from Kuala Lumpur, you can either drive or take a bus to Tasik Kenyir. The trip will take six to seven hours. But if you’re flying to Kuala Terengganu, you can take a taxi (RM100 per car) to the main jetty, Pengkalan Gawi, at the lake. There are also buses to Kuala Berang, the nearest town to Tasik Kenyir and from there taxis cost RM80 per car to Pengkalan Gawi. From this point, the last leg of your journey to your preferred resort or chalet will be across water. Water transportation is the most important mode of travel in Lake Kenyir. All boats are located at Gawi Jetty. Lake Kenyir is 40km west of Kuala Berang and 55km from Kuala Terengganu.

Terengganu International Squid Jigging Fest 2015 or Pesta Candat Sotong Antarabangsa Terengganu 2015 is sponsored by the state government of Terengganu, this annual squid jigging carnival aims to introduce as well as relive the old tradition that was once livelihoods for many along the coast of Terengganu between April and August each year.
