Travel Thursday | Great (Fire) Wall of China

I wanted to start something new today by calling it Travel Thursday (or is there one existed?! I can ride on it). Every Thursday I will (plan very hard) to post a single pic and a short description of it; be it my memories, my impression, my feel, my opinion... etc etc etc. Am sure you get it. Feel free to join me, I thought it will be fun.

My very first Beijing trip and learnt that the impressive Great Wall of China is also known as Great (Fire) Wall of China in cyberworld . Why? Apparently they blocked some sites, my main concern are favourite Facebook & Blogger. Sob sob....

Do you know any other country that blocks FB & Blogger? (As I need to get mentally prepared if I ever need to go there).

Beauty In Darkness/Chawanna/Traveller's Anatomy/My Kafkaesque life/ and the rest of travel blogger, do join in.

:D

Wow, that is MEAN! I mean, come on - China wants to take part in the world, they can't turn back the clock. I find China fascinating, but also a bit scary. Travel thursday is a good idea Lily, and the black and white picture looks great!

I hope to join TT next week, if I remember, haha. If so, I'll post on my green blog :)

China is of course a dictatorship, people are not free. They're controlled, the media is controlled, you can't say or do as you please. Makes me appreciate where I am now and the freedoms I can enjoy.

As for the firewall, I know Taiwanese love to post .jpg files on Chinese forums and leak the information from abroad, such as the nobel prize victory of a Chinese dissident, that according to Chinese media, did not happen. Lily says half of Chinese netizens are pro China gov., the other half is against, but they can't do much... Hope more and more young Chinese get to travel to free democratic countries and one day, if they become leaders, they transform the communist party and make China free and democratic. Yes, I have a dream :)

That is so weird that they block those things! I have not heard of it. Every time I come to your blog I think, where haven't you traveled?!!?!?! I am so jealous. And that is so neat you plan to come to the U.S. next June! Come visit me! If you want to, you are more than welcome to stay with us or if you want maybe we can meet you somewhere and go climbing or hiking or camping! That would be so neat. Utah has a lot of National Parks and Yellowstone is not that far away. Let me know what you think! My email is itssimplelove(at!)live(dot)com

Haha, I was just asking for the Facebook name of my colleague in China, and was told about this ban.

Ouch.

My boyfriend is studying abroad in China now and his internet is just awful! It shuts off at random times and blocks a bunch of things.

I've never been to the Great Wall before, but I've heard that there are certain parts you can go to that aren't tourist-ey and are absolutely gorgeous! Have you been?

Hello, I'm leaving for Beijing in winter. What are the places of interest around there? Other than Great Wall of China.

Please let me know on my tagboard if you have replied to this, thank you.

What a great photo you choose for the beginning! Very special! Like walls of the sea!

I think, different if not many countries have restrictions. Maybe they are not so largely published. Read any contract in the european or american sites. You have not use these or that words, you have not write words that can offence anybody -do you think, there is one among 6 milliards of humans that could be not offenced by any word you can say or write?
etc etc etc.

So, the media want to advertise only what they are paid for.

Lily Riani said...

nisa,

replied on your blog. do enjoy yourself yah.

liudmila,

you are right, the wall looks like wave in the sea.

gosh! really, i didnt even know if its not because of you are telling me. i guess its controlled news nowadays then.

i wonder why they block social networking sites in China? but before i left for china for the Olympics in 2008, they questioned my purpose of visit because i used to work for a tv station and i was considered a media personnel. hmmm

Lily Riani said...

Pinoy Boy Journals,

not sure about that, but interesting right. i wasnt asked, the visa was issued as per normal.
