Horsing Around Big Time!

AH-HAH! What were you thinking?!??! Hheheheh....

OK, since we were on the topic of safaries (Well, at least I am or was). I remembered when I visited Singapore Zoo few years back (I love Zoooooosssss, I don't know why), they have this section introducing maybe more like a petting zoo for kids on horse, donkeys, mules and stuff (one section of it). The thing is, since I was there with Maimon and family, we linger longer here and I decided to do some "self-educating" time. Despite that I love zoo, I don't bother much on learning about animals (WEIRD! I know!).

So, what I am getting at is...

What's the difference between mules, hinny, donkeys, burros, and jackasses etc?

Well, I certainly don't know... back then. Now? Abit... but kept on confusing myself! I decided to put this on blog and give myself a recap and 101 tutorial to all (Noble huh! Perasan!). Of cause, those who have more and further info, please share!

Colour coded to add the fun element.

DONKEY / ASS : A male donkey or ass is called a jack, a female a jenny, and offspring less than one year old, a foal (male: colt, female filly). The ass is wild and the donkey is domesticated.

Donkey/Ass

BURROS : Small donkey is sometimes called a burro (from the Spanish word for the animal).

Got it? OK, let's continue.

MULE : Offspring of a male donkey (jack) and a female horse (mare). All male mules and most female mules are infertile.

Mule

HINNY : Domestic equine hybrid that is the offspring of a male horse and a female donkey (called a jenny).

Hinny

Now, I thought I add weirder stuff (I got this from Wikipedia).

ZEBROID : Zebroid is the generic name for all zebra hybrids (also zebra mule and zebrule) is the offspring of any cross between a male zebra and any other equine: essentially, a zebra hybrid.

DONKRA : Offspring of a male donkey and female zebra, called a zebra hinny, or donkra, do exist but are rare.

See whether you confused yourself by now.

QUAGGA : It was distinguished from other zebras by having the usual vivid marks on the front part of the body only. In the mid-section, the stripes faded and the dark, inter-stripe spaces became wider, and the rear parts were a plain brown.

Quagga

ZORSE : Offspring of a male zebra and a female horse. This cross is also called a zebrula, zebrule, zebra mule or golden zebra. Like most other animal hybrids, the zorse is sterile.

Zorse

Last one, am getting headache now...

HORBRA: Offspring of a male horse and a female zebra (The rarer reverse pairing) is also sometimes called a hebra, zebrinny or zebret.

Hahhahah.... Do you like you hybrid lesson so far?

Can you tell the difference? I can't.

P/S : Bananaz, your creativity needed. Hhehehe...

Well I have just learnt a whole lot from that post. Who would have thought there were so many hybrids.

And I haven't been to a zoo in so long. I think that must change.

Thanks for the education. I must be honest, though, and say I hope you won't be giving us a test.
